After almost nine year wearing the Niners jersey, former
starting quarterback and No.1 Pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, Alex Smith, will see
a new start with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Smith, who sustained a concussion last season, was replaced
by Colin Kaepernick for the remainder of the season, despite the fact Smith was
subsequently cleared to play.
However, after winning just two games last season, the
Chiefs are willing to bring Smith onboard and give the 29-year-old quarterback
a second chance. The deal is part of the
team reorganization implemented by Kansas City’s new coach Andy Reid, who wants
to acquire Smith’s services as soon as possible.
Kansas City is open to trade its second-round pick in the
2013 Draft to get Smith’s services. Smith will play under terms of his
remaining contract, which guarantees a base salary of $8.5 million next season.
The Niners drafted Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in
2005. He remained a secondary QB until 2010, but with the arrival of Coach Jim
Harbaugh in 2011, Smith was named the starting quarterback heading into the
regular season. The same year, Smith set new personal and franchise records and
led the 49ers to a 13-3 record and their first NFL playoffs since 1997.
Smith kicked off the 2012 season as the 49ers' starting
quarterback and guided his squad to 6 victories and 2 losses before suffering a
concussion on Week 9 vs. the St. Louis Rams. A quarterback controversy began
when Smith was cleared to play and Coach Harbaugh decided to keep Colin
Kaepernick as the official starter.
Kansas City still owns the No. 1 pick in the draft, a chance
they would likely use to draft Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel as the
No. 1 pick in April’s draft.
